Is It Time to Replace Your Furnace or Boiler?

Basement heating system

Buying a new heating system for your home is an investment, and like any investment it requires careful consideration to make a decision about whether to keep your old furnace or boiler or move on to something new.

So how do you make that decision? Here are three key questions to ask.

  1. How old is your current furnace or boiler? – If your heating system is more than a decade old, it’s time to start thinking about a replacement. Today’s high efficiency models will outperform any 10-year-old system – even a well maintained one. On average a new heating system will pay for itself within about three years.
  2. Are you satisfied with your current system’s performance? – Are you comfortable everywhere in your home? Are your energy bills rising every year, despite performing regular maintenance? If your furnace or boiler it still isn’t working as quickly or as effectively as it should, it might be time to replace it.
  3. Is it worth it to repair your old system? – When it comes to repairs, the two key questions to ask about your old system are how much will they cost and how likely are you to need additional repairs down the road? If the cost of a repair is 50 percent or more of the cost of a new furnace, you should replace it.
