How to Dispose of Old Propane Storage Tanks

1. Always Call a Pro
It should come as no surprise that propane tank removal usually requires permits, inspections, and documentation—especially for underground tanks. Most propane dealers who refill cylinders will take back old tanks for recycling. If not, your town’s public works department or local hazardous waste disposal site can usually point you in the right direction.
Another easy option is using a tank exchange program. When you swap your empty tank for a full one at an exchange location, the company takes responsibility for removing old tanks from circulation and disposing of them properly.
One thing you should never do is try to empty the tank yourself. Unless a professional ensures every trace of propane is gone, the tank can still pose a risk. If a tank with propane inside ends up in a compactor, it could ignite or even explode. It’s simply not worth the risk.
